What taxes will I pay after moving to Avondale?
Three taxes matter for newcomers:
- Sales tax. The Arizona Department of Revenue's rate table (effective October 1, 2026) lists a 6.3% combined state and Maricopa County rate on retail sales, and the City of Avondale adds 2.5%, for 8.8% total. The City's rate drops to 1.5% on the part of a single retail item over $5,000.
- State income tax. Arizona's 2025 tax forms use one flat rate of 2.5% of taxable income for every filer.
- Property tax. Your bill depends on the home's assessed value and the tax districts it sits in. My guide on property taxes in Avondale explains how to look up a real bill, and what a Community Facilities District is covers an extra line some newer neighborhoods carry.
What does it cost to set up utilities?
Plan for one-time setup costs on top of your monthly bills:
| One-time cost | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| City of Avondale water, sewer and trash turn-on | $60 next business day, $100 same day (requested by 2 PM) | City of Avondale Utility Billing |
| City of Avondale standard deposit | $175 (or $200 in two bills; $250 for an unoccupied home) | City of Avondale Utility Billing |
| APS electric deposit, if required | Roughly two times the average bill | APS deposit policy |
| SRP electric service establishment fee | $30 next day, $45 same day | SRP residential credit policy |
Checked October 31, 2026. Deposits can often be waived with a letter showing 12 months of good payment history from your current utility, so ask for one before you move.
Which electric company you get, APS or SRP, depends on the address. Check each company's service-area map or ask the seller which one bills the home.
How much does it cost to register a car in Arizona?
Arizona charges a vehicle license tax (VLT) each year you register, based on the car's value. Under A.R.S. § 28-5801, the value starts at 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price, and the tax is $2.80 per $100 of that value in the first year. Each year after that, the value drops 16.25% and the rate is $2.89 per $100.
Example only: made-up round numbers, not real Avondale prices.
| Example only | Amount |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer's base retail price | $30,000 |
| Value for VLT (60%) | $18,000 |
| First-year VLT ($2.80 per $100) | $504 |
A car you bring from another state isn't in its first year, so its VLT is lower than this. The ServiceArizona fee estimator gives the exact amount, and registration and title fees are added on top.
What other monthly costs should I plan for?
- Homeowners insurance. Rates depend on the home and your history. My guide on homeowners insurance in Avondale covers what drives the price.
- HOA dues. Many Avondale neighborhoods have an HOA, and dues vary from one to the next. See what HOA fees you pay when buying in Arizona.
- Summer electric bills. A/C runs hard from late spring into fall. APS and SRP both offer price plans based on the time of day you use power, so compare plans for your household when you start service.
- Commute. The Census average is 28.1 minutes each way, so fuel and time matter if you'll drive to Phoenix or the East Valley.
How do I build my own Avondale budget?
Start with a real home or rental you like, then ask for these numbers before you commit: the property tax bill from the Maricopa County Treasurer, the HOA dues and any transfer fees, an insurance quote, and the seller's or landlord's recent utility bills. Add the one-time costs above, and you'll have a budget built on facts, not guesses.
